For us, Visingsö is one of those places.

Set in the middle of Lake Vättern, this small Swedish island has a way of slowing everything down. It’s not about ticking off sights — it’s about being present. Long bike rides, simple picnics, and letting the kids run freely between open fields and lakeside beaches.

It’s the kind of summer we grew up with – and now, the kind we want to give our children.

🚗 How to get to Visingsö

Getting to Visingsö is part of the experience – and surprisingly easy.

Drive to the small lakeside town of Gränna, known for its traditional candy shops and charming streets. We recommend you to take a stroll and buy some candy canes and maybe take a fika or lunch here before you head down to the harbour. Fromthere, you take the car ferry across Lake Vättern to the island.

The ferry runs frequently, takes about 25 minutes, and you can either bring your car or explore the island by bike once you arrive.

👉 Tip: During summer, it’s worth arriving a bit early as it can get busy. Make sure to book your tickets through this site.

🚲 Getting around the island

Visingsö is best experienced slowly.

One of our favorite ways to explore is by bike. The island is mostly flat, making it perfect even with kids. There are several places near the ferry port where you can rent bikes, including options for child seats and trailers.

You’ll find yourself stopping often – not because you have to, but because you want to. Sometimes the best moments come from simply biking without a plan. Small farm stands, quiet roads, flea markets and open landscapes make every turn feel like a discovery.

🐎 Horse & carriage through the oak forests

One of the most unique experiences on the island is riding through the famous oak forests by horse and carriage. Take a ride on the southern part of Visingsö with the delightful Visingsötåget (Remmalaget). Departing from the horse and carriage Remmalag platform in Visingsö harbour, this journey is an exciting experience for both adults and children. It’s calm, quiet and almost feels like stepping back in time.

🐐 Visit Bengtsgårdens Minidjur

Bengtsgårdens Minidjur is a small, charming mini farm where kids can get up close with animals like goats, rabbits and other friendly farm animals. It’s a relaxed and hands-on experience – simple, genuine, and perfect for little ones who love animals.

🌳 The historic oak trees

Visingsö is known for its beautiful oak trees, many of which were planted in the 19th century by the Swedish navy. The plan was to use them for building warships – but by the time they were fully grown, they were no longer needed.

Today, they create one of the island’s most iconic landscapes. Walking or biking under these great trees are a majestic experience.

🏰 Visit Castle Ruins

A stop at the castle ruins is a must. The ruins of Visingsborg Castle sit picturesquely on the shores of Visingsö, right beside the harbor. Once a grand residence, today it’s a peaceful and slightly mysterious place where kids can explore and imagine what life used to be like.

Another alternative is to visit Näs Castle Ruins. It’s was one of Sweden’s oldest medieval royal castles, located on the southern tip of Visingsö. The ruins date from the first half of the 12th century and were an important royal residence back then.

🌊 Beaches & lakeside picnics

Visingsö offers several beautiful spots along Lake Vättern where you can swim, relax and enjoy a picnic.
The water is actually very clear and refreshing – perfect on a warm summer day.

At the southern tip of Visingsö lies Näs. Here you will find both a pier into the water and a small sandy beach. At the pier, there are benches, a barbecue area, toilet, and a gazebo perfect for a picnic.

On the north tip of Visingsö lies Sandudden, right next to the golf course and airfields. Here you can enjoy a long, lovely sandy beach facing south, which is very popular in the summer. There are benches to eat at and a dry toilet.

On the western side of Visingsö, you will find Rökinge brygga, a jetty perfect for cooling off during a bike ride! Here there is a nice jetty with a ladder into the water, benches, and a pleasant gazebo with a grill. If you go a bit south of the jettys you find a small sandy beach area to explore.

🍓 Where to eat & fika on Visingsö

No summer day on Visingsö is complete without a proper fika (or two 🤍).

The island has several charming spots where you can sit down, slow down, and enjoy something simple and delicious – whether it’s a long lunch or just strawberries and coffee in the shade.

Here are a few lovely options to look out for:

A beautiful lakeside spot perfect for lunch or coffee with a view. Think simple, fresh dishes and that relaxed summer feeling where you don’t feel rushed to leave.

🍰 Persgårdens Café 

A cozy, classic café atmosphere – ideal for a traditional Swedish fika. Perfect stop during a bike ride across the island.

🌿 Wisingsborgs Trädgård – Garden Café

A hidden gem surrounded by greenery! Enjoy a fika in this garden dating back tot he 17th century. This is the kind of place where you sit a little longer than planned, soaking in the calm.

🍓 Farm stands & picnic moments

One of our favorite things is actually keeping it simple — picking up fresh strawberries, pastries or snacks and creating our own little picnic by the lake.

🏡 Where to stay on Visingsö

Whether you’re staying for a night or planning a slower getaway, Visingsö offers a few charming and relaxed accommodation options — all with that same calm, nature-close feeling.

Here are a few lovely places to consider:

🌿 Visingsö Pensionat

A cozy and classic stay in the heart of the island. Simple, welcoming, and perfect if you want everything within easy reach – especially when traveling with kids.

🏡 Wisingsö Hotell & Konferens

A slightly more elevated option with a peaceful setting. Great if you’re looking for a quiet, comfortable stay with access to both nature and the main sights.

🌲 Visingsö Camping

For a more laid-back, close-to-nature experience. Perfect in summer if you enjoy camping life, cabins, or traveling with a caravan – and ideal for families who want space and freedom.

🏡 Airbnb stays on Visingsö

For a more personal and flexible stay, Airbnb is a wonderful option on Visingsö.

You’ll find charming cottages, traditional Swedish houses, and farm/countryside stays – perfect if you want a bit more space, your own kitchen, and that true “live like a local” feeling.

Staying in an Airbnb can be especially lovely when traveling with kids, giving you the freedom to move at your own pace – slow mornings, home-cooked meals, and evenings that don’t have to end early.

👉 Tip: Look for stays close to the ferry port or centrally on the island if you want easy access to bike rentals and activities.

If you prefer more options, staying in Gränna is a great alternative. You can easily take the ferry over to Visingsö for a day trip, while enjoying a wider range of hotels, restaurants, and cafés.
