The ship was built in the 17th century and sank in Stockholm harbor in 1628, only minutes into its maiden voyage. More than 300 years later, Vasa was salvaged in 1961 and carefully preserved. Thanks to the low-salinity, cold Baltic Sea – the ship is preserved remarkably well. 98% of the ship is original!

Standing in front of the ship is quite an experience. It is enormous, detailed, and surprisingly impressive even if you are not particularly interested in maritime history. It was so much bigger than we thought! We stood in awe of it’s beauty!

You don’t actually walk onto the ship itself, but the museum’s different levels and walkways allow you to see Vasa from several angles and get a close look at its incredible details. On one of the floors there is a small movie screening that shows a movie about Vasa.
